1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD

Here we have a 1985 Mercedes Benz 300SD in excellent condition. This is an S-Class Benz, the largest car made with the popular and very reliable and long-lived 617OM engine. A five-cylinder turbo charged diesel these engines are known to last for hundreds of thousands of miles without major service.

If you have a long commute and/or would like to be able to run bio-diesel or Waste Vegetable Oil, this is the car for you. It is a fantastic highway cruiser getting about 25mpg in great comfort and safety. These are the Mercedes that are "built like a bank vault."

This particular example is in especially good shape. Having come to New England from Texas I have owned this car for three years and it has never seen snow or salt. The body has zero rust and the interior is exceptionally clean. With only 86,000 miles on it, this car has a very long life ahead of it.

Exterior
Not surprisingly, as a 25+-year-old car, the exterior has some minor dents and scrapes. They are too subtle to show up in the photos, but I did want to mention it. Also, the radio antenna is bent and needs to be replaced. The rear windshield seems to have a small water leak around the rubber seal. I put a length of weather stripping around the top edge as a quick fix and have never had any problems since so have never gotten around to replacing the rubber gasket. The rubber gasket is available for about $30 on-line. The passenger side front running light lens has a small hole in it from a stone or something. All the lights and signals work as they are supposed to. That's it; as I have said, this car is extremely straight and rust free.

Interior
The interior of the car is in even better condition than the exterior. The seats, door panels, headliner, dash and carpeting are all excellent. The vinyl covering on the B-pillars has wrinkled a bit over time — presumably from the Texas heat. The windows, electric seat adjust, sunroof and central locking all work flawlessly. The air conditioning does not work as the system needs to be re-charged. The heat works fine.

Other
I have had this car for three summers now and have taken it on a number of long trips with great success. This car really eats up the miles. I have had the car serviced regularly (oil changes) and recently had the brakes done all around and the transmission fluid and filter changed. The tires have less than 2000 miles on them and are in essentially new condition.

I bought the car with the intention of doing a Waste Vegetable Oil conversion, but I have been working out of my home for a couple of years now and I just can't justify it for the number of miles I put on. Spend some time on-line and you will learn that many people consider this the ultimate platform for WVO and bio-diesel. The engine is extremely durable and relatively simple and inexpensive to maintain compared to today's high tech, electronically controlled diesels. This car is not a museum piece to be sure, but it is in way above average condition with low miles. This car is meant to be driven and enjoyed by someone who appreciates the quality of this era Mercedes and/or wants to enjoy the benefits of a bio-fuel ride. This car is registered and inspected in New Hampshire and ready to drive away.
